Divert working equipment before it's shredded
If your city runs e-recycling collection events, a significant portion of what gets collected still works. Laptops that boot. Monitors in good condition. Phones and tablets with years of service left. Under standard e-recycling, all of it is shredded.
DurableWorks can divert those items before they reach the shredder and return them to useful life.
How partnerships work
We're flexible about the form. Most partnerships fall into one of two patterns.
Option 1: Divert at collection events
A DurableWorks volunteer attends your e-recycling event, identifies working equipment as it arrives, and takes eligible items on the spot. Everything else continues into your existing recycling stream. No change to your process, no storage required, no staff burden. This is the easiest place to start.
Option 2: Host as an ongoing dropoff location
For cities that want to do more, we're building partnerships with municipal facilities to host year-round dropoff points for working electronics. Your staff accepts donations into a designated space and we pick up on a scheduled basis once volume warrants. This requires modest space and light handling on your side, but captures a much larger share of working equipment from your residents.
Either model, we provide a simple manifest of items accepted and quarterly summaries of diversion volumes for your reporting.
What we accept
Laptops, desktops, monitors, tablets, phones, iPods and small handheld devices, and related peripherals (keyboards, mice, cables, power supplies).
What we don't accept
CRT monitors and televisions. Large appliances. Anything containing refrigerant. Printers (we can't refurbish them economically). Anything with visible physical damage to hazardous components.
What we do with it
Working items are refurbished and placed with individuals, community partners, or the Goodwill tech store. Non-working items are harvested for parts and the remainder goes to certified e-recyclers. Full data sanitization (NIST 800-88) on every device. Details on our process.
